Take off the cover and wash it on a gentle cycle or by hand, then air dry before fitting it back on. Vacuum the steps between washes to lift fur.

Push them flush against the side of the bed or sofa so there is no gap.
Lure your pet up one step at a time with a treat and lots of praise.
Repeat for a few days until they use the stairs on their own.
