The short answer

Unplug the fountain with dry hands, take apart the removable wet components, wash approved surfaces, rinse thoroughly and clean the pump as its manual directs. Filters need their own care and replacement schedule. Keep a clean water bowl out while the fountain is apart, and never run the pump without sufficient water.

Before taking the fountain apart

Keep the clean backup bowl out until the fountain is reassembled and working normally. Prepare the rest in this order:

  1. Put fresh water in your cat's familiar bowl.
  2. Unplug the fountain with dry hands and move the adapter away from splashes.
  3. Photograph the assembled parts so their order is easy to restore.
  4. Lay a clean towel beside the sink for removable components.
  5. Put small covers and fittings in a shallow dish away from the drain.
  6. Check the model's diagram before opening the pump or washing electrical components.

Wash the surfaces that hold water

Empty the reservoir completely. Separate the tray, spout and any removable channels. Clean approved washable surfaces with warm water and a suitable mild detergent, then rinse until no residue remains. Pay attention to corners and the underside of the drinking tray, where a quick top rinse misses dirt.

Run a fingertip over the clean surface once it is rinsed. If it still feels slippery, wash it again. The Stream Cat Water Fountain and Ripple Cat Water Fountain need maintenance of their wet parts even when the water looks clear.

Give the pump its own inspection

A pump can collect hair at its intake while the main bowl looks tidy. Follow the manual to remove accessible covers and, only where instructed, the impeller. Handle these small parts gently. Clear visible debris with an appropriate small brush and rinse the parts that the instructions allow you to rinse.

Keep the electrical connector dry. If a part is cracked, a wire is damaged or the pump smells hot, leave the fountain unplugged and contact the seller. Our pump noise checklist covers checks that do not require electrical repair.

Treat filters as separate maintenance parts

Remove the filter before washing soapy components. Follow its own instructions for rinsing, initial preparation and replacement. Do not use detergent on a filter unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it. Write the installation date somewhere you will see it, such as the inside of a maintenance notebook.

Replace filters as directed and sooner when the instructions call for it because of dirt or reduced flow. A filter change cannot substitute for scrubbing the reservoir. Conversely, a clean bowl does not make an overdue filter usable indefinitely.

Reassemble and check the result

Fit each component securely, refill to the model's operating range and dry the outside before reconnecting power. Watch the first few minutes of operation for leaks, weak flow or unusual vibration. Restore the fountain only when it is working normally; leave the backup bowl available.

Base the ongoing schedule on your manual and the actual condition of the fountain. Check it daily and clean earlier if you see film, food or hair. For manufacturer examples of removable pump care, see Catit's cleaning guidance; its exact intervals apply to Catit models, not automatically to yours.
