The short answer
Remove trapped hair, clean each tool by its own care instructions, rinse approved washable parts and dry completely before storage. Some pads, handles and electrical tools should not be submerged. Inspect pins and edges for damage. Cleaning does not make a bent or rough grooming surface suitable to use again.
Sort the kit before it reaches the sink
Group the tools by construction so you can choose the appropriate cleaning method:
- Plain washable combs, checking the handle and joints too.
- Padded brushes, checking whether the pad can be wetted or submerged.
- Wood or adhesive-backed parts with their own care limits.
- Powered tools, keeping electrical connections and batteries protected.
- Household upholstery tools, stored separately from pet grooming equipment.
Read the care directions for each group instead of soaking the whole kit. Our slicker and comb comparison explains their different coat tasks. A familiar handle shape does not establish that a tool belongs on the pet or that its interior can take water.
Remove hair without damaging the contact surface
Use the release function where a tool provides one, or carefully remove collected fur as its instructions allow. Avoid levering pins with sharp objects or pulling a pad away from its support. Look beneath the visible hair for residue and damaged parts.
The Self Cleaning Slicker Brush makes fur release convenient, but the released hair is only one part of cleaning. Inspect the pins afterward for bending, roughness or missing tips where relevant. Stop using a damaged surface rather than keeping it because the handle still works.
Wash only the parts intended for it
For an approved washable Steel Grooming Comb, follow the permitted cleaning method and reach between the teeth with a suitable soft brush. Rinse thoroughly and dry. Check the handle and joints separately if they are made from different materials.
For padded brushes, confirm whether the pad can be wetted or submerged. Do not force water into a sealed or electrical part. If the instructions are missing, ask the seller before choosing a soaking method. The material visible from the outside does not tell you how the interior is built.
Keep cleaning and disinfection distinct
Routine cleaning removes visible dirt and residue. If there is illness, contamination or a professional recommendation to disinfect, use an appropriate method that is compatible with the tool and follow all label instructions. Do not invent concentrations or mix household chemicals.
Keep pets away from cleaning products and wet residues. Rinse or dry as the relevant directions require before reuse. A strong smell is not evidence of better cleaning, and a product that disinfects a hard floor is not automatically suitable for a padded grooming brush.
Dry, inspect and store for the next session
Allow all permitted parts to dry completely before closing the kit. Check seams, tooth spacing, pins and grip. Store tools out of chewing reach and away from damp towels. If a comb has a sharp damaged tooth or a brush pad comes loose, repair only by a supported method or replace it.
After a bath, reset the kit alongside the towels; our bath setup guide includes the surrounding routine. Clean tools make the next gentle session easier to prepare, but condition and coat suitability still decide whether a tool is appropriate.
